You've lent us your ears
For goodbyes and hellos
You've listened intently
To our troubles and woes
You've heard all our jokes
Our stories and lines
Lots of laughter and crying
And yelling and whines
When your hearing got bad
You sought help for your ears
It worked really well
and it lasted for years
But those aids they've worn out
And a swift fix you needed
To get digital hearing
You quickly proceeded
Now your smile was suspect
From the time we were little
There weren't many teeth
And those few were brittle
But that never subtracted
From the smile that you shared
The one full of love
That showed us you cared
One day you took charge
To the dentist you sped
Those new pearly whites
Nearly knocked us all dead
Your new set of choppers
Were really quite neat
They weren't like your own
But man could you eat
When those babies cracked
You did all you could
You repaired them with spackle
And glue made for wood
But the last time they broke
They were broken for good
And you could not replace them
with teeth made of wood
So you found a great place
That designed a new plate
And as far as we know
They are working just great
The down side of this
Is the money it cost
Without help from your children
I think you'd be lost
But you've given us all
that your senses could give
It's time for us now
to make sure that you live
Every day full of wonder
Whatever it brings
With this family you fathered
In this world full of things
We'll enjoy your eyes' sparkle
As you view your life's show
Taking in all the sounds
That the world let's you know
And the smile on your lips
Is the sign that we'll see
To tell us your heart
Is as full as can be
This all comes at a price
And that price is high
But to us you are priceless
And Dad that is why
We ask you to graciously
Take what we give
And enjoy every moment
For as long as you live

Poetry: Father's Day
by Shaheen Darr
This poem is for you, dearest dad
Today is father's day but you are not here
You have left us to go to another world
But you
I see you
in my children's laughter
I smell you
in a passing tendril of cigar smoke
I hear you
in the blast of a Sousa march

A memory has come along
Tugging at my heart,
A Father's Day from long ago

Daddy do you remember
The day that I was born
You took me in your arms forever
With a smile upon your face
Creating a special
