said this: " I know many of you are frustrated by kind of care wounded veterans are getting today through the VA. One of the reasons for the frustration is when a soldier is honorably discharged, he or she needs to prove to the VA that any injury they received is war related. The soldier needs to gather the paper work and make a case for medical service and disability
benefits. This is wrong. If you are in the British or Australian army and you are honorably discharged, it is assumed any injury or disability you suffered during your serve is war related and immediately treated. There is no waiting- and benefits flow immediately. Anybody who talks about patriotism and our fighting men and women will agree the current system needs to change. On Day one of my Presidency, I will issue an Executive Order to the adopt the British Army's system of how to honorably treat our brave veterans.
Finally, of the 84 million Boomers born between 1945 and 1963, it is important to recognize that over 75% came from families whose parents did not go to college, were considered to be blue collar vs. white collar, or grew up on small family farm or ran a small business. Barack can speak to these Boomers directly from his life experience and remind them of the core values they grew up with: having a real sense of belonging, giving something back because of the sacrifices made for them, believing in equality of opportunity, and the power of education to change lives.
These are the core values of many of the current voters Barack is having so much trouble with. One way to reach them is to that his campaign is not just about talk- but action. These voters want to see him act boldly and not just respond to the Clintons or McCain. What if he said the following: "Today my campaign is going to ask every Obama supporter to try and live out and model many of the promises I have made in this campaign. I will ask the millions for my supporters- without any visible identification with the Obama campaign- to creatively try to change the way Washington works and do it on a grass root level every day between now and November. And we will start this effort in small towns and in areas where working class and poor people have been left behind. For starters, our Obama volunteers will visit nursing homes, monitor rives and lakes for pollutants, mentor kids in science, math and reading, teach seniors how to use the internet. We will tell the real stories of real people making change throughout the rest of our campaign."
I believe the Obama campaign needs to take bold and creative steps to connect with a group of people with whom they share so much in common.
