Acerola cherry or Barbados cherry as it is also known is believed to originate from Yucatan but it is also found in Central America, Texas and Florida.It has been a well- preserved secret in the Caribbean Islands until 1955 when Brazilian botanist smuggled it out of the country in his purse. The plant itself is a small shrub with cherry-like fruit with several little seeds inside it. 80% of the contents of cherry is juice. The natives have been using acerola to treat dysentery, diarrhea, hepatitis and fever.Although the studies of these properties are insufficient. Main health benefit of acerola which is by supported by studies is a high content of Vitamin C.It exceeds the content of Vitamin C in peeled oranges by far. Acerola cherries can have from 1% - to 4,5% of Vitamin C (1000 to 4500mg/100g).In comparison to the same amount of oranges which have only 0,05% or 50mg. Thanks to the enormous concentration of Vitamin C acerola cherries are a great supplement.It should be used in moderation though as the high doses could trigger diarrhea. The studies have shown that acerola proud itself on antioxidants which is a benefit for those of us who wants to keep young.Antioxidants help our skin cell to fight those "free radicals" that cause aging and cancer formation. After some research it has also been found that acerola cherries posses anti fungal properties. How to get these wonder cherries? They come in juices,smoothies, food supplements. Acerola goes well with most berries but it is divine with other red fruits, such as grapes, blood oranges and cherries.
