Every person I know wants to feel protected in their own homes. We all want to be able to come home from a hard day to a relaxing, safe, and secure environment. No one wants to come home to a house that has been ransacked and robbed of many cherished possessions. The question is; which is more effective, a dog or an alarm system.

There are pros and cons to having either of these. However I strongly feel that having a dog is more beneficial to the overall well-being of the homeowners. Alarm systems can and do work as well. The major problem with an alarm system is that it can be set off very easily, sometimes by simply walking around the house at night. Not only is the alarm extremely loud, the police or the alarm company are called in the process. What a hassle! This can be very annoying especially at 2 a.m.
Dogs on the other hand do not inconvenience anyone else but the homeowners. Many would be robbers will be scared off when they hear a dog barking on the other side of a window or upon entering the yard.

Dogs have excellent hearing and they can hear when someone is near the house before the owner does. My dog is only six months old, and she can hear when a car is coming down the street before we do. She always alerts us when company is coming giving us ample time to meet the visitor at the door as they are pulling into the driveway. Dogs become used to the neighborhood squirrels, rabbits, etc.. They usually do not bark at the noises of these animals and dogs seem to know what does and does not belong within their environment.

Plus an obvious reason for having a dog is the display of affection they have for you. You can not play with or hug an alarm system. It would probably go off in your ear causing hearing damage. Dogs provide unconditional love and many hours of enjoyment. Dogs are more than happy to protect their owners without question. Financially, the cost is probably the same for both. An alarm system has an installation fees as well as a monthly fee for upkeep. Dogs can be purchased or adopted so that fee varies and of course there is the vet visits and weekly food and occasional toy buying for them. Dogs may be a bit more expensive depending upon how much an owner spoils them.I would rather pay the extra money to have a dog which essentially become a member of the family, then pay to have an ugly white or gray box attached to me wall right by the front door for all to see. Dogs are the way to go for protection.
