I am a woman of my family.
There is really only one.
We live the same life
And have for generations.
We are an echo.
We stay the same as our mothers,
And their mothers before them.
Only the names ever change.
It was barely a life when
It was first lived.
Now the little joy it once held
Is almost too faded to feel.
I don't want my life to be what
They are handing down to me.
I want more,
And not because I'm too good,
Or they weren't good enough.
Just because their pain would be
For nothing if I didn't learn.
And the one hope that never died
Was that it would be different
For their daughters.
One thing I know we all have
In common is wanting to be
The last to live this life.
We all want the echo to
Be silent forever.
