Beginning of The Chain

Part one: Donna

Chapter 1

The Beginning

Donna walked through her new house, the wood creaking under her feet. The high ceilings were crossed with the rafters that ran the length of the house. The triangle tilt of the roof gave the impression that the house was larger on the inside than on the outside.

She saw images of bats hanging from the beams at night and shivered. The walls were covered with a layer of wood paneling that made her think of cabins. Her mom stepped up behind her and put a hand on her shoulder.

"So what do you think Donny?" her mother, Martha, asked.

Donna lifted her thick, long, dark brown hair and braided it as her emerald green eyes scanned the furnished living room.

"It looks a lot like a huge cabin, but it seems great mom," Donna said uncertainly, looking into the knowledge filled dragon green eyes that belonged to her mother.

"It had better be great for the price I paid for it. Come on, let's go see your room," Martha said and led Donna up three stories of stairs, up to her room.

Personally though, she thought that all of the light in the world couldn't dispense of the shadows in the room. Sighing, Donna walked over to her huge canopy bed, lay down on the comforter, and closed her eyes. Moments later she fell asleep.

Donna woke with a start. She'd felt someone in the room with her. Her familiar, Kate, a spirit of a cat that follows her around, came in and jumped onto her bed, meowing. Donna extended her hand and Kate purred as she rubbed her semi-existent fur against Donna.

Donna felt the jade necklace at her throat. It had started to get warm. She knew that whenever it did that trouble, which seemed to follow Donna, was never far behind. She climbed off of her bed and walked over to her window to see that it was dark out side.

She glanced over at her alarm clock to see that it wasn't on. She walked over to the bed and picked up
