Wiccan symbols and their meaning

Created on: May 13, 2008

Wiccan has a variety of symbols with several different meanings. These symbols have been around for thousands of years. Let me start by telling you about the first symbol.

The Wand: is a magical stick that has often been called a club or baton. This is also the male symbol for fire.

The Broom: was another symbol used to sweep out negative energy. It was not used for flying. It represents purification and cleaning. The Broom also was used for newlyweds to solidify their vows when going cross the threshold of their home.

The Cauldron symbol represents the resplendent fertility, inspiration, abundance and generosity. This symbol also was called the Cauldron of Cerridwen. In wiccan traditions the Cauldron must stand on three legs to represent the triple goddess.

Now the next symbol i'm going to talk about is the Triple Goddess. It represents the Goddess and the feminine aspects of the universe. There are 3 aspects of the moon they are waxing, waning, and full. Also there are 3 stages of a womens life and they are mother, crone, and maiden, these are displayed as a full moon. This particular symbol has many forms that all involve the lunar cycle.

I have explained a few of the symbols but this next 2 symbols are the most important one to me.

The Pentacal: is a wiccan symbol that represents fire, earth, water, and air. The fifth element of the Pentacal is the spirit. Each point of the Pentacal represents one of the five elements i just spoke on. Now the single circle in the Pentacal represents the circle of being, the harmony of nature, and the unity of the craft. Some believe the single circle has many meanings but these were the most common.

The Book of Shadows which is my favorite. This is used to write spells, and their personal experiences. It was also used to record useless spells that did not work.

Now here are a few more symbols that i would like to tell you about.

The Witch's sign: is an eight spoked wheel. This sign is from its resemblance to a combination of the Roman numeral 13. It was used as a timepiece back in medieval times.

The Wheel of the year is a symbol that the four seasons divided by the equinoxes and solstices. Also it stands for the holy days of the year, and it is eight of those.

A classic symbol of wicca is The Night. The Night is ruled by the moon and the stars, and it is the time for mystery and magick.

All of these symbols were intricate and complex. They can be traced back to many cultures and traditions. I hope you have learned a great deal of knowledge about these symbols and use them well.
