Communication skills are imperative when it comes to relationships and family. Without communication we are unable to let each other know our thoughts and feelings. This can lead to an information break down concluding in an argument or crises. Providing one another with appropriate communication will strengthen relationships and bond the family more closely.
They key to communication is effective listening. While studying to receive my Bachelors Degree in Interpersonal and Organizational Communication, my coursework consisted almost entirely of listening techniques. If someone is not intently listening, then the communication is completely lost.
Listening effectively sounds pretty simple in and of it-self. However, there is a lot more than just hearing the other person's words. Listening also requires paying close attention to the communicator's tone of voice. Becoming aware of one's tone of voice and body language can help you to asses the situation more clearly. The facial expressions, body gestures, and sounds coming from the communicator can help you more clearly identify with what they are saying.
Without successfully hearing all of these factors the communication between two people can be entirely lost. So the next time you go to have a heartfelt conversation make sure to keep your ears as well as your eyes peeled. The communication cannot be successful unless you are taking all of these things into consideration.
When you are the one doing the talking you must realize the above factors. If you place yourself at a distance, or cross you arms in a certain way, you may be sending the wrong signal. Crossing your arms tightly against your chest shows the other individual that you are closed off. This could mean that you feel uncomfortable with the conversation at hand, or even that you feel shut off from the person to whom you are communicating. Opening yourself up to the person with body gestures will help improve you communication techniques.
Another skill that you can work on is your tone of voice. When communicating about a serious matter you want to make sure you come across correctly. Just like an email can be read so many different ways, your voice can do the same. So when you are trying to get your point across do so in the correct tone. If you are angry, go for a stern sound and look. If you are being playful, laugh and make gestures which communicate playfulness.
The key to successful communication is putting all factors together to effectively get your point across. Working on some of these skills can help you effectively do so. Remember to listening attentively when someone is communicating their feelings to you. And when it is your turn to express yourself, show your emotions with not only words but actions as well.
