Are first impressions everything in this hectic world? Should you be concerned about your appearance? Does the way you project yourself physically affect how others perceive you? Unfortunately, the answer to all these questions is yes.
The human species, while complex on certain levels, is relatively simple when it comes to visual stimulation. We are naturally attracted to what is pleasing to the eye. We also tend to have a greater opinion of someone who presents his/herself as stylish and "put together" than we do for someone who dresses sloppily or makes no effort to look better.
Prospective employers judge our appearance, as do our peers, our potential mates, and everyone that we pass on the street. Will your appearance alone be the basis on which an employer hires you for a position? Not likely, but an interviewee has a better chance of making a good impression if the employer believes he or she is organized and makes an effort to look appropriate for the job. By doing so, an employer will make a judgment that the applicant is a competent individual who wants to be taken seriously.
Tattoos are another big issue when it comes to how people judge another's appearance. Although tattoos are becoming more common in society, they are still viewed by many to be the markings of a wild, rebellious individual. Some individuals continue to believe that tattoos adorn only bikers and punk rockers. In today's world, that old misconception could not be more wrong. I'm still amazed, however, at the difference of treatment I receive whenever my tattoos are exposed as opposed to how I'm treated in public when they're covered by clothing. I appear much more approachable when my inked flesh is hidden.
When it comes to the wonderful world of dating, appearance is not everything, but it certainly helps. The first thing that attracts us to members of the opposite (or same) sex, is a physical feature that we find attractive. We may become more or less interested based on a person's personality, but our initial attraction comes from the person's appearance. It does not mean we all have to be a supermodel to be attractive, just that we should all take care of ourselves inside and out.
The next time you go to a public place, look around you. Study briefly each person's appearance. Try to analyze what type of person each one is based on what you see. Notice which ones you find attractive and which ones you don't. If any one of them came into your workplace and applied for a job, which would you hire based on appearance? Make your judgments about what you believe each one does for a living. Based on appearance, see if you can determine which ones are students, homemakers, office workers, entrepreneurs, mechanics, doctors, teachers, etc.
We are all judged by our appearance, whether it be by others or ourselves. Some people base their entire opinion of someone on first impressions. Whether you subscribe to that same theory or not, know that wherever you go, someone is judging you based on appearance alone. Project yourself confidently because it shows and always makes a good impression. Terrific first impressions could improve your life. After all, you never know who might be looking your way.
