Top 10 Johnny Depp characters

by Ashley Sickler

Created on: May 12, 2008

Since the very first time I watched Edward Scissorhands as a child I knew there was something special about this actor. Johnny Depp has such passion and brilliance. With all the characters he has taken on he has become them for the movie-goer. Out of his 40+ movie roles it is hard to narrow it down to 10, which just shows how timeless an actor Depp really is.

#10: Gilbert Grape - What's Eating Gilbert Grape - Who couldn't forget the sensitive caring character of Gilbert. An instant adoration for Gilbert, the devoted brother to Arnie who suffers from autism, comes as he tries to coax him down from the water tower. A boy who wants only the best for his highly obese mother, and yet would like a life of his own. And soon, through the meeting of Becky, will realize what he's looking for.

#9: Willy Wonka - Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Although many people were not thrilled with remaking the Gene Wilder classic, I believe Johnny did brilliantly. He wasn't mimicking the originally, but expounding on it. His quirkiness is what makes him definable.

#8: Roux - Chocolat - Along with the peaceful colors and music comes Depp as a river drifter smitten with a Chocolate Shop owner. It's highly romantic, showing his softer side. And who doesn't love a movie with delectable chocolate!

#7: Victor Van Dort (voice) - Corpse Bride - Even as an animated character, Depp is able to bring himself to life with his soft spoken voice and nervous vocal stumblings as a man trapped into a marriage with a corpse! His true affections are for his bride-to-be, Victoria, whom he had just be introduced to and betrothed to. It's a lovely children's movie, which adults will even enjoy.

#6: Raoul Duke - Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: An adaption of Hunter S. Thompson's novel, Fear and Loathing features Depp as a drug-crazed writer searching for the American Dream. Not to mention making sure no drug is left behind.

#5: Mort Rainey - Secret Window - Mildly creepy, with a dramatic plot twist, Depp plays an author who is being told he stole a story from a gun-toting cowboy. Mort isn't sure what has happened, but he won't rest until he has figured it all out.

#4: Jack Sparrow - The Pirate's of the Carribean movies - Finally Depp hit it mainstream with this odd, but lovable pirate. His biggest concern, besides treasure, is where has all the rum gone?

#3: Sweeney Todd - Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - I love musicals of all kinds. Sweeney has long been a favorite of mine. And as a fan of
