Whether we like it or not, we live in a materialistic society. This usually has negative connotations for understandable reasons. However, as in most cases, there are two sides to every story. There often is another perspective that goes unexamined because it seems unpopular. I fear that too many times we accept other people's conclusions without doing the footwork ourselves.
America is the wealthiest nation on the planet. We own more cars, televisions and homes than any other nation. We have more choices concerning everything from what to eat to where to vacation. We are often portrayed as over-indulgent spoiled brats. But to look at our materialistic society in a fair and objective way, let's set aside those stereotypes for a moment.
To begin with, this country didn't start out in the lap of luxury. Centuries ago, the world was a level playing field; each region had nothing materially except natural resources. What made America different so that today we enjoy a standard of living while other nations are in abject poverty?
Of course, there are many factors, but the most obvious answer is that we are a free people. Our nation is successful because we are allowed to dream up ideas, work at them and succeed or fail at those ideas. If those ideas serve other human beings, and we are efficient at delivering the service or product, then we will be compensated for it. What makes this system so excellent is that the person buying the service benefits from it as does the seller. It is mutually rewarding. The buyer is not compelled to buy if he doesn't wish to.
Each citizen is free to pursue as much or as little success as suits him or her. Freedom says that you will be paid for your work and diligence. It is up to each one to determine how important it is to them.
Since this system is open to anyone who wants to try it, many people will join in for the incentive of profit. This means that everyone involved is driven to do their best since there are others trying to succeed at the same product or service. America has material wealth because she challenges her people to do their best.
Another reason for success may seem controversial to some, but it is verifiable history. As a nation we have embraced Judeo-Christian values. Where these principles have gone through history, prosperity has followed. These standards mandate honesty, sacrifice, hard work, persistence through hardship, service to their fellow man and charity to those less fortunate.
There are many Third
