The first consideration is the type of business. A grocery store cashier and a clothing store cashier have different types of sales. Also many stores have cash registers that the customers use, as opposed to a trained in house cashier.

There are many features that can be included. Grocery stores can have scales so that items such as produce can be weighed. There are bank card/credit card terminals that are usually sold separately. Most retail operations use barcode scanning which is another attractive feature.

Different model cash registers have different options for calculating taxes. There are items that are taxed and items that are not. The number of keys that can be programmed are also important. Registers can be programmed to keep track of inventory. They can even alert management when supplies of a particular item are running low and should be reordered.

The cashier also needs to be able to enter manual changes. Often there are sales and discounts that are not always entered properly. A price may have been entered wrong and needs to be changed at the register. There is usually some form of security software included to help prevent theft and embezzlement. This necessitates the use of a key by a manager or other person that can be trusted when sale changes are made.

The receipt is an extremely important part of the sale. It is date and time stamped with the store name and number. Also it will include other information such as the cashier's number. It is important for tax records, customer credit records, proof of purchase, and other reasons as well.
