God! He, she, it, they have, do and will play a huge role in human society. God is responsible for all which is good, and all which is evil. Through out his article I will identify god in the general male Christian type view, but in a way that can be applied to different types of gods.

To provide reasons on why god exists or to believe in him you must identify what god is. If you believe that god is an all knowing Omni present all good being then you face the argument from evil. In its simplest form, a good god wouldn't allow all the evils we have in this world and thus this god does not exist. There are problems with this though, such as free will, free will is the reason for evil. God gives us freewill therefore evil is a manmade thing.

If God didn't exist we would make him. People who believe in life after death have a lower death anxiety than those who don't believe in life after death. There has been no conclusive proof that life after death is possible. Near death experiences have failed to show that out of body experiences are anymore than a hallucination that fills the void where you ceased to be conscious. Mediums too fail to show that contacting the dead is possible; a skilled person can easily lead others to believe that they are contacting and talking to people that they have never met before. This is not saying that it is impossible, but there is not enough proof to suggest otherwise. God may have also been created to give us something to blame in times where we can't explain such horrendous happenings such as natural disasters. It is easier to blame the death of a loved one a supernatural being than just to accept that they died of natural causes. God is no more than a coping mechanism.

It is also easier to explain the unknown by saying god, as opposed to doing the hard scientific work to explain otherwise, bumble bee flight was once thought to be impossible and therefore proof of god's work. We now know that bumble bees create a vortex allowing them to break the weight restraints of flight. The more we know, the less we need to use god to explain.

Creation is the only good explanation for human life? Yes both a statement and a question. Anybody with a good understanding of evolution should be able to see how humans have evolved from a ape like ancestor (no we didn't evolve from apes, we just share a similar ancestor in our evolutionary past). This itself doesn't rule out god. God and evolution can work hand in hand but we cannot accept the creation story therefore a certain type of god does not exist.

For every reason to believe in god there is an equally good reason not to, and vice versa. There is no reason to believe in god other than to fulfill our psychological needs. Yet there is no strong reason to believe that god can't exist. Whilst believing either way may be more acceptable to most people, taking an agnostic stance will allow you to see the full picture.
