For hundreds, thousands, perhaps even millions of years, mankind has been faced with that burning question, "who should I take to the prom, and how should I ask her to go with me?" Yes, you know prom season has begun when junior and senior guys roam the halls, clammy and shaky (or maybe that's basketball season). The choosing of a prom date must not be taken lightly, this choice will affect your life forever. Your date will be introduced to your parents, thus inducing years of dinnertime conversation when your parents think you've been too long without a date (or disapprove of your current mate). This may bring up the ever horrifying suggestion, "Whatever happened to that nice girl you took to prom? She was so pretty..." Enough said. So choose wisely and be sure to factor in your relationship to said girl. If she's a random dame you happen to brush past on the way to biology class, at least attempt to have a conversation with her before "popping the question" otherwise you may seem too eager, and downright creepy. It's best to ask a girl you know well, or want to get to know well.
Now that you've singled out "THE girl", it's time to think of a perfect time to ask her. I realize that every girl is different so some of these following suggestions may not apply, hopefully you know her well enough to discern this...if not, take some advice.
Rule #1. Do not ask her in front of a large group of people. This screams insecurity as most girls would feel bad to deny you in front of half the school. Unless you're already dating or on really friendly terms...keep it private.
Rule #2. Don't be overly sappy, it may cause awkwardness. Avoid buying expensive gifts as bribes or writing long, love-sick poems.
Rule #3. Absolutely do NOT ask her via text! I don't care who she is, that's so wrong.
A few positive suggestions:
-take a picture of yourself dancing with an invisible partner and write a note saying, "It's so much easier to tango when there's two!"
-slip a note into her favorite type of chocolate bar
-find out her locker combination from a friend and leave a flower in her locker with a note.
-get a cheap, Cinderella storybook and stick a note to it that says something like, "Cinderella is overrated, if you go to prom with me I'll make sure that you don't have to ride a pumpkin, lose a shoe, be in a hurry to leave, and no one will have to search for the prettiest girl in all the land."
-stop her outside of class and say, "Let's ditch this class and go to prom together instead."
-call her to the office and be waiting there with a sign about prom
-meet her at her car (or the bus stop) in the morning armed with a steamy cup of hot chocolate or coffee and a muffin that says "prom" (spelled out with chocolate syrup or frosting)
-hand her a water bottle after a sports game or PE that has a note saying, "You're clearly the prom date for me."
-slip on a tie over your normal school clothes and say to her, "I knew I forgot something! A date"
-create a fake parking ticket with a fine to the amount of "one free prom ticket you may accept at your discretion"
Whatever you decide to do, just have fun with it, but make sure that it's fun for her too. Enjoy the pursuit!
