Pears are often overlooked in favor of their more popular sister fruit, the apple. In fact the two fruits are of the same subfamily and both are related to the rose. The biggest difference between the two is the presence of the woody clusters of cells in the flesh of the pear called the grit. It is believed that the pear originated in China and spread along mountain ranges to Europe to evolve into several diverse species. There are records of them being cultivated by the early Greeks and the Romans. The word pear is also found in the languages of many cultures.
Not only are pears delicious but they are also a very healthy choice. They are loaded with many nutrients such as vitamins A, B complex, K, Calcium, Potassium, Iron, Magnesium and include many antioxidants such as copper and vitamins C and E. Not only that but they are high in dietary fiber. They can contain as much as 5g depending on the size and help lower cholesterol. Pears are also a great food to help with weight loss. Since they have no fat, have around 100 calories and 98% of their calories are in the form of carbohydrates you can eat them without worry. Also for those of you with food allergies pears are among the least allergenic of all foods. They are often included in strict allergy diets for this reason.
Pears should be kept refrigerated to prolong their edible life. They should also not be stored near bananas as this will cause them to ripen faster unless that is your goal. So the next time you are looking for a delicious healthy snack do not overlook the pear. You will not be disappointed!
