What is art? Honestly, I haven't the slightest clue. There's no one, single, universal definition of art because everyone has their, own, unique, visualization, interpretation, and meaning of art, and rightfully so. My definition is different than yours, and yours is different than the next person's, and theirs is different from someone else's. Taking this into consideration and thought, art in turn, has countless definitions, many of which we'll never see, read, or learn about.
Another major facet that contributes to the countless definitions of art is the fact that there's also numerous art forms, and most of us seem to base our definitions only from our personal favorite. In other words, we're somewhat selfish because we're defining something so great and magnificent off of a mere fraction of it's existence, the quaint fraction that we call our own. Think about it. That's like saying that the planets of our solar system are the only planets throughout all of space. Are they? When you think about how vast space is, can you really say that? Seriously, think about this; For the longest we thought there were only 9 planets to our solar system, until a few years ago scientist recently discovered a 10th planet. How do we know there isn't an 11th or 12th? The same could be said about art.
There's visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, theatrical arts, and so many more that I can't even think of right at this moment. Then, within each form, there's sub-forms. What do I mean? For example, Performing Arts may include singing, dancing, and/or playing a musical instrument. Visual Arts may entitle a collection of masterpiece paintings and drawings, or amazing hand-carved sculptures and statues. Literary Arts may include writers/authors, poets/poetesses, screen-plays, best selling novels, etc... Theatrical Arts usually include actors/actresses, stage plays, singers/dancers
What is my definition of art? There's a famous quote: "Art imitates life". I find this quote to be quite true. Take another moment and just think; What's your favorite song? How does it make you feel? How many times have you heard a song you completely related to? How is it that our moods are altered by a certain song/music, movies, a good book, a recital? When you put it into perspective, there's either an art form or sub-form that pertains to every aspect of life. In short, my definition is this: Art "is" life.
