Can a "manufactured" band ever achieve lasting fame?

by Lee Oz

Created on: May 11, 2008

To many, the thought of a manufactured band achieving fame is laughable, and if I'm honest, when i saw this title, i agreed.

Many are people with an average singing voice, who can look good for the television, magazines and Internet when a cameras shoved in front of them. they are told by people in suits what to sing, what to say, how to look and act and ultimately who to be. they shape and control the media, everywhere you look the latest manufactured band are stood there, singing pathetic songs, written by someone else, who's dream of being a 'pop-star' have been crushed due to the lack of shaving and tendency to over-eat.

but are we right to look down and despise these people? to be perfectly honest, i wish i had the figure and voice to pull it off, think about it. you're paid good money to be famous, go to parties, do minimum work, i mean how hard can strutting around, pretending to sing on stage, hanging out with sexy women/men and getting drunk on record labels money be? I'd love to do that, its a rock star lifestyle without working your fingers to the bone perfecting your style and practicing how to be the best.

or is this why we should hate them, because of their lazy, easy entrance into the world of real genuine musicians. they're greedy selfish celebrities. they're everywhere over the media, and to that extent become very influential people. but we're all greedy and selfish deep down, are we not? my best example of an influential manufactured band is the sex pistols who shaped the world of punk music and were a strong influence for years and years worth of genuine bands thereafter.

the problem i think with manufactured bands and why people seem to dislike them is that we are jealous, we watch the television shows and say 'i could do that!' when in fact, we never do, or that we are all too judgmental, how many times have you seen it on television and said 'they're really awful!', the fact is that they are there doing it, and your sat on your ass, eating crisps and judging these people. I'm not defending these people, because i despise them and think they all should all be sat down in a room and told just how pathetic they all are.

my overall opinion is that if a 'manufactured' band have talent and ca stand on their own 2 feet, then let them have it, but before i go, let me ask you this. any band, group, musician you can think off that have done everything their way, with no input from record labels, managers or sponsors. ultimately, the world of modern music is manufactured, just some are more honest about it than others.
