Poetry: I hear you

Her mother told her to do something.

The teen-aged girl, perfected in the use of selective responding,

did not move a muscle... She instead,

just pretended that she did not hear.

If she were to have told her mother what she was thinking...

Perhaps it might have been

something like this:

"I hear you... But that does not mean that I will do what you say Mom.

You will never, ever control me.

I am almost and adult now...

Soon I will be on my own.

I can hardly wait."

Her mother yelled at her to do something.

The teen-aged girl said, "I hear you Mom."

She moved very slowly to do what her mother told her to do.

And while she did so,

the mother watched and remembered a time,

when she herself had said, "I hear you" and the feelings

of being a teen-ager not wanting to be controlled.

She knew, even more than her daughter realized,

that the time was coming,

when soon her daughter would stand on her own.

She hoped that she would see her daughter rise, soar,

and fly freely and yet she knew that she

would miss her when she flew...

She looked at her daughter and almost said,

"I hear you too."
