It can be more complex than your final Calculus exam, more blood curdling than a trip to the assistant principals office, in fact, it can be even scarier than the "meat surprise" wobbling on a plate in the school cafeteria. Asking someone to the prom ranks up there with the greatest fears of mankind. It doesn't have to be so dreadful, though. Finding a creative way to ask not only increases your chances of a "yes", but it can sometimes be easier than coming right out and asking face to face. Whether you're a guy or girl, traditional or unusual, here are ten creative ways to ask a date to the prom, one of which may be just right for you.
1) Send Flowers
A gift of flowers is a romantic gesture that will make any girl's heart pound. The best thing about sending flowers, though, is that they come with a gift card. Whether you order a bouquet online or by phone, you get to specify what is printed on the gift card. "Will you go to the prom with me?" followed by your name and phone number will put the ball in HER court. Make the flowers roses and a return call is practically guaranteed.
2) Use the School
There are tons of ways you can use the school itself to your advantage. If the school paper accepts personal ads, place one with your question in it. If you don't want to be embarrassed in front of the school, you can even use your secret nicknames for each other: "Will you go to prom with me, Cookie Pants? -From Spartacus" will preserve your anonymity. Ask your future date's locker buddy for access to the locker and leave a poster or note to be found inside when they open it. If you're more the goofy type, flying a paper airplane with "Open me!" on the outside and a question on the inside might win over a girl or guy with a sense of humor. You can even include a grade-school "yes" or "no" check box.
3) Have a Treat
Food and drinks are clever places to conceal prom invitations. You can be bold by writing the question on a cupcake or cookie, or make it more of a surprise by slipping it into a fortune cookie. Be unpredictable: how about arranging the message to be written on the band around a Starbucks cup? Or wrapped up in a candy bar that you've cleverly re-wrapped? You can really surprise someone by writing your message on a small, round paper and sticking it inside a Coke lid. Open the Coke yourself and say, "Hmmm. I can't tell. Does this mean I won something?" Then pass the lid to the unsuspecting object of your affection. You're sure to win.
