Creative ways to ask a date to prom

has made it a lot simpler to ask questions you're afraid of asking in person, but it can seem distant and impersonal. Make an email seem far from impersonal by sending a cute, personalized message. Google "Candy heart text generator" to find sites that allow you to create pictures of colorful candy hearts with a custom message. Email one of these with your prom question for a message that will get attention. How about using Photoshop to place your own faces on an old, silly retro prom picture? E-mailing a fun, thoughtful invitation (or leaving one on a Myspace page) will be remembered.

5) Go Postal

There's something sweetly old-fashioned about receiving romantic declarations in the mail. Don't think you have to pen a long, drippy love letter, though. If you're gifted with that skill, you certainly don't need any tips. Send a fun post card with an exotic locale on the front, and write something on the back like "Wish we were here. But I'd settle for the prom. Wanna go?" You could also send a whole pile of letters, 8 to be exact, each with a single word enclosed. When put together, they say: "Will you go to the prom with me?"

6) Encode It

If your potential date is a smart one, you might write your message in a secret code. Say that you found the note and can't figure out what it means. Make it a fairly simple code (like A=1), and watch their expression when they discover it's a message meant for them. You could also entice someone into a game of Super-Hangman, with the lengthy end result being a question from you. If you're both clever, a crossword puzzle or other game will work just as well.

7) Tune In

The radio doesn't seem to be used as much for personal dedications as it used to be, with iPods and MP3s dominating the music scene, but that makes it all the more surprising. No one is ever expecting to hear their name on the radio. Have a special song dedicated to your sweetheart, and ask the DJ to include the prom message in the announcement. You can trick your sweetheart into listening by saying you heard they're giving away tickets to see his or her favorite band.

8) Text It

No, don't send a text message. Use a textbook as a humorous way to ask someone to the prom. Borrow or sneak a school book from the person you want to ask, or switch their book with your own. Use sticky removable paper (like Post-Its) cut to the proper size to customize the textbook. Be sure and pick a page that you know they will be looking at soon, like material covering an upcoming quiz or
