This question addresses a woman's right to control her own body and life. What it does not address is the freedom to make moral decisions based on her moral beliefs, not those of others. If the government enacts laws that says a woman has a right to have an abortion, then it is acceptable and it is a right. If they determine this is unacceptable it will be legislated so.
But should we be legislating our free will away? Or should we be free to maintain the right to choose in life, no matter the morality of the issue at hand. It is many people's personal belief that we will all answer to a higher power for the choices we make in our lives whether those choices are made legally or not.
There are instances where abortion appears to me to be what is in the best interest of the woman such as rape, incest and the like. There are also women in life who have used abortion as a form of birth control because they do not want the side effects of birth control and refuse to use condoms. That speaks much to me of the morality and irresponsibility of the individual, not the law.
We are free to choose the life we wish to lead and how we wish to lead it in most circumstances. Sanctioned by government or not, abortion will continue to exist. As a society it is our responsibility to allow our fellow human beings the right to choose safely how they wish to live their lives and what standard of morality they hold themselves to.
Abortion has been a hot topic for many years now and it and birth control continue to be introduced into the conversation politically. Not only have unborn or unwanted fetuses been disposed of legally and medically, but many other fellow human beings have been severely hurt or killed by those who oppose abortion. Is either choice acceptable? That is not ours to judge.
Just as we protect legally, the right to fair representation for the killer or child molestor, should we not also protect a woman's right to make her own choices in life for herself and her body? Instead of fighting a situation that will always exist whether legally sanctioned or not, should we not instead use our resources to help counsel those who feel they need to exercise that option in their lives so history does not repeat itself? These are all questions I feel would better serve us as individuals and a society in answering.
Yes, a woman should have the right to choose abortion. However, a legal right choose to do something does not always mean it is morally in many minds for a woman to do. Laws and morality are two different issues. Church and state are best kept separate.
