Academic writing often requires a lot of tedious research and information that may be uninteresting to an author requested to write an essay on it. This lack of interest, or possibly the inability to present an old issue into an interesting essay may develop a form of writer's block.
The transition difficulties that occur from high school to college are most recognizable when you're faced with writing an academic paper. Previous methods and writing styles used through high school will not be recognized in the academic community.
Instead of presenting an essay as a personal response or one side of an argument, you now will have to construct one that is based on research and one that will leave your readers with knowledge of the topic and provoke a response.
It is no wonder when faced with writing for an academic audience, writer's block often occurs. So how do you overcome writer's block when writing an academic paper? Read below and you'll find ways to spark your imagination and thoughts into ones that can be used to write your academic paper.
DO YOU KNOW YOUR TOPIC?
Have you performed enough research on the topic you're presented with? Just looking at a topic will not be enough to write a good essay, you will need to know and understand all relevant material, arguments and requirements of the topic.
By knowing your topic, you should be able to develop an opinion on either side of an argument that will allow you to generate some ideas.
WHAT DON'T YOU KNOW ABOUT THE TOPIC?
Write down what parts of the topic or issue you do not know about or those you are unfamiliar with. This will also allow you to develop ideas and opinions that will help you when determining how and what you're going to write about.
CREATE A DEBATE
When sitting down for a meal with friends or family, ask about their thoughts on the topic you're presented with. It is very interesting when people are gathered together and asked to give their opinion on a topic. Many use personal bias and opinion and information that may have been misinterpreted.
If you know information on your topic, it may allow you to present some of your research into the debate that will also invoke response. The response you receive from family or peers can also allow you to formulate new ideas or inspire you to research more on the topic at hand.
Creating a debate and gathering the thoughts and ideas of others will allow you to determine how you can write to the topic. It can be written passionately if it's called for, or can
