Testimonies: Working on the Sabbath

by Toni Doswell

In keeping with the Bible, the seventh day is the Sabbath of
God. That is actually Saturday according to the calendar and
the Bible. Jesus died on the Jewish preparation day, which is
Friday. He remained in the grave on the Sabbath- that would
be Saturday, and He arose on Sunday. We called the resurrection
Sunday, Easter Sunday. St. Mark, chapter 16, and verse 1 says

Christ arose on the first day of the week. This would make
Sunday the first day of the week as seen on the calendar, and
the Sabbath, again, on Saturday.

In harmony with what the Bible clearly delineates, the Fourth
Commandment, as found in Exodus 20:8-11 is a solemn injunction
written by God's own hand saying to remember the sabbath day to
keep it holy. God provides us with six days of the week to
toil and labor. He gives the rest day to all mankind (Mark 2:27).
The Sabbath, as enjoined by the Sacred Scriptures was given from
the beginning (See Genesis 2:1-3). Thus, the Lord Himself rested
on the Sabbath as an example for us. It was not that God was tired,
but it set in motion for all times the will of God for mankind to
rest on that day.

As one of the Ten Commandments, the Fourth Commandment will be
honored by those who profess to be children of God and commandment
keepers. And no, Sunday is not the Bible Sabbath. Sunday is simply
the first day of the week. People keep Sunday because it is a man
made tradition, but not a Biblical injunction. You may search from
all of the Bible, and you will never find one verse to say that
Sunday is the Bible Sabbath. The Jews, who were the original
depositors of the faith, will point out the Bible Sabbath. They
still honor and respect it, and their services are held on the
Bible Sabbath.

Now the question is whether or not to work on the Sabbath. If
you mean work, as in going to your job- the answer is plain if
you are following God's Ten Commandments- "No!" Work here means
day-to-day toil for a livelihood. Not even the members of one's
household are to work. If you mean caring for a sick person, or
doing a kind deed of mercy, then "Yes!" because Jesus did this on
the Sabbath day. He was accused by the Pharisees for doing these
kind deeds of mercy.

Some may not have come to the realization that God, the Creator,
knows what is best for men, women, boys and girls. We buy cars
with owners manuals. They tell us all about the car, and how to
care for it. The Bible, therefore, is God's personal manual to
men, women, boys and girls. It says to rest on the seventh day.
