Hunger is something that we experience every day. When we can afford to buy the food either by dining or cooking, we don't think about those who are sourcing for food. These are the people who may be living in war zone areas, natural disasters hit areas or poor countries.
These could also be the people who are growing food to be sold but unable to afford the same food for themselves. With the threat of food shortage, things are changing. Perhaps, one day, despite the mass amount of money on hand, there won't be any food that is edible to be bought either.
Buying food and sending them to the poor may alleviate the problem for a while. There is the long term food consideration to be resolved too. With the rise of technology and jobs that don't require manual labour such as bending over to plant rice, the lure of more money and less backbreaking work is attracting people to work in cities.
When less farmers are available, the food source is dwindling. Plants still need to be planted with a human touch. Even hydroponics needs a sum before being able to start. Planting food takes time. Even keeping animals for food takes time for them to grow to a certain age before being sold.
All food needs time to be grown before consumption. What are the issues that could be causing the food shortage?
LOW PAY FOR FARMERS
When farmers sell their products, they are often paid only for the product. The product was cultivated with time and hard work. Often, the evaluation is done at product level while leaving out the efforts behind it. Could this be the reason why there is a shortage of farmers these days?
LONG HOURS FOR FARMING
Farming means long working hours. Farmers have to wake up early to prepare food for the animals, gather water for the plants, check the weather among other tasks. These tasks need people to help out.
By undervaluing the work of farmers, could we be neglecting them to this stage whereby food is now at the threat of dwindling? Could over-fishing be the cause of less fish too? Have we replendish what we take from nature?
REPLANT
By cutting down the forest for palm oil, rubber trees, we have created new problems too. Animals such as elephants have to find new homes and may even kill humans and while trying to fit in. Trees take more than 20 years to grow tall and big. Replanting much take place in order to keep nature in balance.
RECYCLE
There will be leftover food. We can recycle the food as fuel for vehicles.
REUSE
Some plants have seeds, plant them back. When parts of certain plants cannot be eaten, find ways to reuse the plants. If marcotting can be done, use it. There are various ways to grow plants.
UNDERSTAND PLANTS
Plants don't just grow anywhere. They grow in optimum climates and soil. Certain plants thrive in cold climates, others thrive in dry climates. Plants bloom in certain periods as well and they have their seasons. Replanting also means that plants have to be planted in certain seasons in order to get the best results.
With a few of these methods being done, improvements can be done to avert the food crisis.
