A "personal relationship with God" has become a bit of a buzz word in recent years. Everyone wants one, everyone has one, everyone thinks everyone else should have one: but very few actually know, understand or are willing to do what's necessary to actually have one.
My "personal relationship with God" started the moment I was conceived. Naturally, I wasn't aware of this connection, and it has taken many years to get to the place where I am in my spiritual journey. It has been a very interesting ride. I've loved every minute of it.
For me, this relationship isn't based on what I have or who I know or even how I choose to act. This relationship is based on words spoken between me and my God. I have a ritual, one I've followed for years now. I start each day by first thanking God for waking me up, and then I ask a simple question:
What do you want me to do for you today?
I ask this question for a reason: I recognize that I am who I am because God made me this way. I understand that I don't function in this world as an isolated creature, but as a piece of the whole. There is the notion that what God has done is put a piece of himself in every living thing on Earth and its our job to be whatever it is that's been imbued within us.
So, I ask daily, what do you want to do for you today? The answer is always the same: go out and be a light, a beacon, and example. Be "ME" in the world.
Lots of people try to do this; and believe me, its not an easy task. You must follow His commandments. You must love and respect and obey and submit to God. You have to let go, and let God consume every fiber of your being. All you do is for Him, all you say is a reflection of Him, all you represent is a reflection of Him.
Now, I am not on task 24/7. There are moments when my carnal side gets the best of me. When I do, I immediately sense the "incorrectness" of my behavior. I know I haven't been "connected" to my God. I can almost taste the negative spirit that works through my body.
My personal relationship with God pulls me back on track. He taps me on the spiritual shoulder and reminds me of my task for the day. One day at time, I try to do his will. I live out my relationship, I don't talk about it, or stand of corners shouting about how important it is to be about it. I simply live it out.
I take the words of his messenger, his Son, and do as I'm told, to the best of my ability. I enjoy talking to Him. I look for Him in everything, because I know He is everywhere. I never forget who my creator is.
My personal relationship with God is based on honesty. I know I'm not worthy of His love, yet I work desperately for it. I know that even as I write these words, they come from a mind that HE filled with thoughts that can be a blessing to someone. I know that what I write here isn't really me writing, its God: saying what He has to say to the one that reads this. That's the crux of my relationship with God. I am the vessel; He is the wine, He pours out of me...over and over again. He fills me up over and over again. We interact with each other over and over again.
This is my personal relationship with God. To be what He wants me to be, and be happy about it.
