How to defog a mirror after taking a shower

For most people the mirror being too fogged over to use after a shower is a real annoyance. It is a natural routine to want to shower and then do your hair, brush your teeth or shave, soon afterwords. Luckily enough there are several different methods that you can use of keeping the mirror fog free whenever you come to use it.

The first thing that you can do is to make sure that there is cold air getting into the bathroom. This might be leaving the window open a little, or having the extractor fan running while the shower is on. This will remove a lot of the steam from the room as it cools the water vapor and makes it settle faster. The majority of it before it can come into contact with the mirror. This doesn't eliminate all of the steam altogether however as there is always some that can get past this and still make the mirror unclear.

If the mirror has already fogged up then using shaving cream is another method that can work very well. Just spray a little onto the face of the mirror and then wipe all over before removing. This works because the cold foam or gel will soak up the hotter water left by the steam as it lathers up, leaving the mirror steam free. If you had a very hot shower and don't have any ventilation then the steam can come back after a few minutes, so you need to be quick with whatever you're using the mirror for here.

The most effective method is to buy an anti fog device, which acts kind of like a humidifier in reverse. It makes basically draws the fog to it and creates an equivalent force to the heat of the shower. This then meaning that the whole bathroom remains fog free, allowing you to use the mirror immediately after a shower. This is also the most expensive option however, with prices ranging from usually around $100 upwards.

There are a few other things that you can do as well that are easier and cheaper than that though. Firstly there are now anti fog mirrors that you can buy that will actually stop any fog from forming. And the best part is that they usually don't cost a lot more then regular mirrors either. Lastly there are anti fog sprays that you can get that you simply spray onto the fog where it is dispersed and can be cleaned away. However as good as this product is it is something that is a temporary solution rather then just a cure. So you will have to buy them indefinitely if you want to use this method of fog dispersion.

Most of the products i mentioned can be found at most larger stores and home ware outlets pretty easily. The thing to remember is that some of these ideas only work for the mirror, where others work for the whole room. Protecting the entire room is probably better because over time steam from showers can damage wallpaper or paintwork and will mean that you will have to redecorate sooner. Also from a safety standpoint, if you have a tied floor steam can make them very slippery when you step out of the shower.
