Essential after prom tips

by Nich Ole

Created on: May 10, 2008

Anyone who has ever watched a raucous teen movie that involved a night following the prom, or as anyone who personally attended a wild post-prom party can testify to-the REAL prom night fun doesn't start until after the lights come on, the DJ goes home, and people start showing up in droves to the designated after-prom party locale.

After prom partying, and all the obnoxious behaviors usually associated with it, have been a rite of passage for decades, and while most parents and even some teen organizations strongly discourage the activities that occur at these events (the consumption of alcohol and illegal substances, engaging in sexual activity, etc.) I am not your mother, father, or one of these youth advocates.

While I don't openly support such self-destructive behavior, I live in the real world where vital information that you need keeping the statistical majority of you who -will- participate in such activities safe is far more important than pretending these things just don't happen. So what three after-prom tips do you need to know to have fun and still make it home to your anxious mom at the crack of dawn? I will impart to you my tried and true wisdom. Please note: after-prom success requires pre-prom planning! (Oh, and moms? You may want to close your eyes!)

USE DESIGNATED DRIVERS:

This is a must! Before prom night, decide on a designated driver. In fact, it's better to decide on several designated drivers, especially if it's a large group of friends. Surely, there are people in your social circle who are up for the task of playing chauffeur for the evening. Draw straws amongst your friends if you have to, but designate drivers!

Once the party begins, designated drivers should always confiscate keys from EVERYONE who will be drinking! Some people do not like to give up their keys after they've had a few drinks; take the keys beforehand.

Please, before prom, also consider talking to your parents-you may be surprised at the reaction you receive. Remember, they went to a prom once-upon-a-time, too. They may be willing to agree to let you attend an after-prom party in exchange for a phone call home from you alerting them of your need for a ride home.

If you don't think your parents are open-minded enough, or you feel like you can't talk to them, a good idea is to grab your phone book and locate taxi services in the yellow pages. Write their numbers down (or program a few into your cell) and take them along with you to your prom with enough cash to cover a ride
