How to be a good prom date

by Sarah E. Sanuth

So you are going to the Prom, but you want to make sure that the two of you are going to have a good time. You don't have to be Mr. or even Ms. Wonderful to ensure that you are being the best date.

First and foremost, keep it simple. Don't attempt to try and go over the top, or be better than anyone else there. This is a time for you to have fun, so have fun. Don't worry about what anyone else is doing.

Be yourself. You have your friends because of who you are, don't try to impress anyone or try to bring the attention on yourself. The attention is already on everyone there, and everyone thinks that the attention should be one them. They are right, but there is plenty of light to go around.

Don't be a puppy dog. Give each other the freedom to hang out, and again, have fun. You don't want to be the one who is following your date around the entire night, or the one being followed. This can only lead to one uncomfortable night. Loosen up and mingle, you have all night to talk and dance with each other. Your seats will be next to each other, won't they?

Don't get jealous. Your date has friends, and you need to accept it; just as you have your friends. Whether or not your date is your boyfriend/girlfriend, don't get mad when he wants to dance with one of his or her friends of the opposite sex. After all, the Prom is about friends and of course, dancing.

Don't argue. If he or she wants to pay for some part of the evening, allow them. Who pays for what shouldn't be the topic of the conversation the entire night; you have better things to talk about and a lot more people to talk to. Take your time, the night isn't over yet.

Relax. Go with the flow. If your date want to introduce you to someone, even if you may not want to meet that person; go anyway, say hi. It isn't going to hurt anything.
Don't make things too structured. Ever been on a vacation with your family that was so scheduled that you barely found the time to have fun? Don't let this happen on the night of your Prom, either.

Don't think too much. The more you think about things, how they are not going right, or they would be going right if this happened; is only going to make your night miserable. Live in the moment that you are having right now, because that is the moment that is going to make the night memorable, memorable for the rest of your life.

And hey, it wouldn't hurt if the one you were with that night thought they had a great date, a good friend that didn't let anything frivolous happen to ruin the night.
