Poetry: I am

Woman
First, Last, Forever

Do you know who I am?
I am a mother. I am a child.
I am holder of knowledge and keeper of legacies
I am creator and I am the created.
Do you know my name?
I am the teacher and I am the taught
I am tangible yet I cannot be touched
My essence flows free as the Nile
For Africa is my home
I am ruler of nations and subject to all
They try to find me, but I am hidden.
And upon my uncloaking, they did not believe.
I am the mystery and the answer.
Do you see me now?
Do not be ashamed, your eyes were closed in ignorance
Upon your revelation you find solace in me
My lightest touch commands the utmost respect
But after many suns have set the loyalty fades
I have been misused and abused
Still I persevere
The sun now rises uncovering my worth
And awaken the sleeping to my story
You can again acknowledge my presence
For I am Woman
And age to age I have been there
A link to the past and a guide to the future
Walk my footprints and you shall reach the Promised Land
I will never lead you wrong.
