thought-provoking and perfectly scripted V for Vendetta was released. This is the story of one mans quest to bring about the downfall of a corrupt government. Directed by James McTeigue and breathtakingly staged in a distopian London it is an exquisite foray into anarchy. The alliterative V, played with subtle but moving deftness by Hugo Weaving (Matrix) is incensed with overthrowing corruption using 5th November as his foil. The fact that Weaving had to act the whole movie behind a mask, giving nuance, movement and colour to his role as V had many viewers awe-struck. The music is inspired and the ending brought tears to many. Natalie Portman (Star Wars) as Evey Hammond saved by V from corrupt police officers attempting to rape Evey. V takes her to safety in his undergound home filled with antiques and oddities. She both thrills and unsettles V. Her beauty and his trust in her is nearly his undoing. She betrays his trust but only once and the film ascends into a climax that is rarely seen. John Hurt (Alien), Stephen Rae (Interview with a Vampire) and Rupert Graves (The Madness of King George) give brilliant performances. A film that will make you want to become a politician....just to make things right. The film is true to its roots, a rare find.
