Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino. And boy does it show! The crossover between comic book visuals and real action is mindblowing. It is totally committed and loyal to the comic book. This film is at once funny, sick, stylish, violent and sexy. It doesn't get better. The cast is outstanding with Bruce Willis, Michael Madsen, Mickey Rourke, Elijah Wood, Benicio del Toro, Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, Josh Hartnett and Rosario Dawson to name but a few. I could go on forever about this film but better still...... Watch it. I defy it to not be in your top ten afterwards.
BLADE. First appeared in Marvel Comics Tomb of Dracula #8 in 1974
In 1998 the first Blade film appeared. Directed by Stephen Norrington our hero Blade played by Wesley Snipes, half vampire half human, cut a swathe through the evil vampires walking the earth. Snipe is a dashing, tattooed hero with a keen eye for Leather and a very big and sharp sword. Snipes' Martial Arts training came to the for in this film, he is buff and capable. He is helped along the way by Kris Kristoffersons Whistler who, after buddying up with Blade supplies all of the technical knowhow for Blades quest. The first film in the trilogy is loyal to the Comic book ethos and although does not follow it exactly it shows great observation and adaptability throughout. Stephen Dorf is Deacon Frost, a vampire intent on a vampire sodden world, an evil mind with an already expanding bevvy of followers. He plays the part of Blades arch enemy and erstwhile Nemesis with gusto and his eventual downfall in the film is crammed with clever C.G.I. Whistler is murdered in this first film by Deacon Frost and as far as the viewer is concerned he is now out of the picture. Blade on the other hand is not so flippant, Whistler was like a father to him. BLADE 2, this time Directed by Guillermo del Toro (think Hellboy) in 2002 threw a whole new light on the dark underground world of the vampire and hunter. The emphasis now was on a super vampire played superbly by Luke Goss (Hellboy 2) called Nomak. He is one step above a normal vampire and soon sets about annihilating all vampires in his way. The similarity between Nomak and Blade however ends there. Shockingly Blade is drawn into a battle allied with a group of vampires called The Blood Pack led by none other than Ron Pearlman as Reinhardt. Together they go to war against the super vampire. Kris Kristofferson returns once again as Whistler but this time there is a new kid on the block who goes by the
