One of the websites offering individuals the chance to promote and sell their written work is Constant-Content (CC). Anyone considering submitting work to CC should be aware of the pros and cons of the site to help them decide if it's the right market for their work. I have written articles for CC for some time now and the advice given is based on personal experience.
Some may consider that the 35 percent cut that CC takes on every sale is one of the disadvantages of writing for the site. However, when you consider what you're getting for your money, it's perhaps not (especially if, like me, you're a writer who has no experience of how the world of freelance writing works). Having a site such as Constant-Content through which to sell and market your work is, therefore, well worth the 35 percent given up on every sale. This is one of the big plusses of writing on CC, and is especially important for anyone who is trying to beak into the world of freelance writing. It means you don't have to send enquiries out to publishers (that is, of course, assuming you know how to put one together in the first place): you just submit your articles and wait for the customers to come to you.
Another advantage to writing on CC is that your articles are edited and checked for plagiarism. The editing process at CC causes some issues for potential writers because it's not an editing process as such, rather the return (or rejection) of an article if it doesn't meet CC's writing standards. The posts on the CC forum are testament to how upsetting this process can be for some, but it should never be taken personally. The editor at CC is able to recognize the potential in the writing that's submitted and will not reject on a whim; however, he's also able to recognize when a writer's work needs a considerable amount of revision and pulls few punches in telling them so. This is done to ensure that the quality of work submitted meets CC's standards. In addition, all articles are checked for plagiarism, including self-plagiarism. For example, you might submit an article to CC having forgotten that it's already posted elsewhere on the Web; CC will advise you of that and it may be necessary for you to change the license rights for which you're selling your article.
At CC, you can choose how much of your work you want to give away, which is another big plus. Articles sold at CC sell on a three-tiered basis:
- "Usage" rights means that you essentially sell a copy of an article,
