The planning of a Wiccan wedding can be a wonderful time for a couple to look deeply into their spiritual beliefs and to consider what is most important to them. Such strongly held beliefs, which may be different to traditional, classical beliefs, can help to further bond the bride and groom as they plan how best to conduct their wedding and decide how to celebrate their nuptials.
One of the best areas to begin planning is to make the choice as to exactly where the wedding is to be. When considering where to get married it is important to note that different areas of the world have different ideas about where you can officially get married and about who performs the ceremony, in order to make the union officially legal in the eyes of the law.
In some place a Wiccan wedding ceremony is not classified legally as being a true wedding in the eyes of the law. Until this changes it is best to consider whether you wish to hold a traditional wedding reception briefly to deal with this issue, as well as your true Wiccan ceremony.
You may feel that your Wiccan ceremony is enough for you and that you have no need to perform any legal wedding to satisfy current laws where you are. My husband and I however, chose to hold two ceremonies, one Wiccan and one 'legal' so that we were seen to be officially married.
When we had our own Wiccan wedding we were required to perform a simple legal wedding, similar to that which takes place in a registry office. We made this as close to our own spiritual beliefs as possible and kept our spiritual atmosphere by holding the ceremony on a balcony overlooking the sea with garlands of flowers adorning the area.
We then proceeded to a stunning location nearby, even closer to the sea, in a field which we had held a blessing ceremony in earlier in the year to prepare for our wedding. A Wiccan Celebrant came to perform the ceremony for us in a sacred circle.
Where ever you choose to hold your own Wiccan ceremony, in a place which is special to you, you can create your own sacred circle by sweeping before sprinkling salt water around the circle. After we had done this for our wedding we then set the boundary of the circle with petals which were sprinkled by my flower maidens, but you can use rocks or a rope for this if you prefer.
Within the sacred circle it is usual to have an alter where you can place any tools which will be used in the ceremony. We had an embroidered cloth which has particular meaning for us personally
