Animal facts: Wolf

The most mysterious wolves to ever inhabit the united states was the large species of what the ranchers called the Lobo. There were Lobo Wolves that inhabited Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, and all the surrounding area. These Wolves were smaller in stature than the regular gray or red wolves, but had different habits.

The big problem with these Wolves involved livestock. They didn't just kill for food. They seemed to kill for sport, even though they ate more than our conventional well known wolves.

There will be people who disagree with me, but I knew a man in the late 1940s that was with Teddy Roosevelt when he decided to do away with the much larger species of the gray Lobo found further North. These wolves traveled alone, except for breeding in the Winter and the parents would stay together while their young were growing and they had to care for them. Once this was accomplished the adults would disband their family and go their own way.

These wolves usually traveled a specific area and were very seldom seen. One could bring down the largest buffalo alone. They didn't pick out the weakest animal to bring down. One of these larger Lobos would attack the largest animal of a herd of Buffalo. Remember, they traveled alone.

I'm not sure Roosevelt told the story correctly, for obvious reasons, but he had planned this track down for several years, and had bred these killer dogs to track and travel with him and his group to go after the Lobos. He had no idea what was in store for him and his dogs.

Before I proceed I will say that I think these particularly large gray Lobos were a cross breed, between the smaller powerful gray Lobo and a Husky, or Alaskan Sled Dog. I have no idea how they got together. The scraggly looking wolves found in Mexico and Texas didn't come close to the massive, beautiful Lobo I will mention later.

Roosevelt and his Killer Dogs and men started tracking what they thought was a pack of wolves. This went on for weeks. These wolves were very smart and in this case none were even seen. Traveling mostly in the woods, it was hard to track by prints and the dog pack he brought along kept going in circles. One night when all the men except the guard were asleep, the dog pack he had brought along were going crazy. They woke up, turned them loose, and were sure the wolves would be dead by morning, since there were around fifteen dogs in the pack.

The next morning everything was quiet, so they set out looking for their dogs and what was left of the wolves. To their surprise, they found their whole pack of dogs totally destroyed beyond recognition. Not too far away they saw one lonely wolf lying on the ground. They thought She was dead. She was asleep, since she was worn out from the confrontation with his Killer Dogs, which were all dead. When the old Bitch Wolf woke up she was ready for them and started to attack the men, but since they had guns, her life was ended that day. We don't know for a fact that any of these large Lobos still exist, since they only traveled alone and at night, but I think they were all killed off by Ranchers.
