There is no doubt as time goes on electronics should improve drastically. We are now able to build more realistic robotics that aid the space program in their experiments so why not video games as well? Throughout my 27 years of life I have watched the video game industry go from the 2-D pong on Atari to the amazing graphics of the Xbox-360. I have personally sat on the curb of my local Best-Buy store to procure a Playstation 3, and I've even been ridiculed and had near physical attacks for doing just that! video games have become an addiction for a ton of people and not just little kids. The average serious gamer age is about 30 years old.
Graphics in games are not the only important factor in making a great game as we all know. The physics and a sense of environment escape have been improved to the point that these in-game characters actually live, breath and think for themselves with the thought of preserving their own lives. One might argue that games are becoming too realistic as you can basically do anything from murdering, robbing, and have sex. Games like Grand Theft auto and God of War are prime examples. there are certain areas that need work to really advance in my opinion, like facial animations when characters speak and even voice acting can be a blessing or curse in a game depending on the skill of the actor or actress. It really doesn't take a genius to see the strides game developers have made even in the last 10 years going from 2-D platformers to wide open worlds like the Morrowind franchise: Oblivion.
Keeping that all in mind there is a sad fact for video game enthusiasts, unless you are financially "blessed" you will have to make a decision between consoles when they first break into the market. With the Playstation 3 costing $599.00 and the Xbox-360 Elite at $400.00 most people are forced to make a choice on which system to buy. For gamers that is the equivalent of a parent choosing a favorite child. The console war and pricing is definitely one of the negative aspects of the progression of video games and doesn't seem like it will be much better in the future.
With the direction game developers are currently taking, there will be amazing leaps and bounds for the video game world in graphics, game-play, character development etc. I am very interested in seeing where the world of video games will be in the next twenty years, I have a feeling we'll all be strapping ourselves into virtual reality gear and living out our wildest dreams and fantasies as we fumble around our homes and offices punching and kicking holes in walls and each other as we quest for that ever elusive perfect game session.
