Guide to the best board games

Remember sitting down on Saturday nights with your family playing board games, talking and laughing? Those days are back.

Classic board games and family board games have been created over the years to become new improved household items. They have become learning tools for children and fond memories for adults.

Classic board games will be with us for all time. We may get new and old games on our computers, televisions, or even on video game consoles but there will always be something special about sitting down to play an actual board game. We as humans need interaction, communication and thought to thrive and playing board games is a great way to achieve this.

The benefits of board games are immense. They bring friends and families together for learning and fun. Parents watch as their child's face light up when they answer a question correctly for trivial pursuit or when they pluck enough cherries in Hi- Ho Cherry-O. All manners of things can be taught to children through the use of board games. They learn about sharing, taking turns, being a good sport, and that is just the conduct that is learned. They also learn about math, science, word association and spelling through games like Operation, Scrabble, Monopoly, and Yahtzee just to name a few.

The five best rated classic board games today also include a few vintage board games you may remember.

1. Monopoly- The game of real estate, making money and paying your debts to society.

2. Scrabble- A great learning game when you come up with new unique words to score points.

3. Checkers- A vintage board game that is still a favorite.

4. Chess- A vintage board game that teaches strategy, adaptation and the moment to overcome.

5. Life- The game that teaches real life situations.

The best five family board games are:

1. Yahtzee- A great game for learning to count.

2. Life- Real life decisions and consequences to them.

3. Scattegories- This game is great because you need to think of as many words possible in a short amount of time.

4. Sorry!- A great game just for the fun had of playing it. You start thinking your safe until you draw a card, then suddenly you have to slide back three spaces.

5. Jenga- This game is quite full of tension once you start sliding the long bricks out of the tower.

Among the five best rated children's board games are:

1. Connect Four- A terrific strategy game almost like tic- tac- toe yet harder.

2. Sorry!- This game is great for all ages and very easy to understand.

3. Clue- The game of mystery which never gets boring.

4. Yahtzee- Its all in how you roll the dice.

5. Battleship- "You sunk my battleship!" is still a great line even today.

All the games mentioned above have wonderful benefits for families, friends and children. Board games bring us closer together, teach us to communicate,

The best way to compare what makes a good board game and what makes a good children's board game is to search out a game and give it a whirl. Find the educational value, what ages it is rated for then let your children give you feedback on it. As long as they are having fun they may not realize they are learning in the process. A good family game makes us want to come together, laughing, talking and having a great time.

Whether your looking to play a classic, vintage, new, or unknown board game there is something out there for everyone. So get together with your children, your friends, or your whole family, grab a game and let's play!
