24E. Sofia glanced down at the little piece of paper clutched in her hand to the electronic sign above her head which read 1-25E for what seemed like the hundredth time. The right gate, the right time, and yet none of the people coming off of the tram belonged to her. She sighed and lightly kicked the blue bricked wall of the airport. Seventeen days now. Seventeen days had gone by since Sofia had seen the man she loved. Of course, they had only know each other for a total of three months, but time doesn't matter. What did matter was how much Sofia hated the US government at this point in time. How dare they make her boyfriend go to the US embassy in India just to get his VISA a stupid stamp! Sofia shook her head ruefully at the thought, trying to think of something more pleasant to pass the time
She then smiled, thinking of how her father was enthralled she was dating a respectable boy from India. Well, a man rather, being 28 and seven years her senior. None of that mattered. Thinking back to the day before he left made her grin at her boyfriends daftness. He had told her to close her eyes and to trust him. Naturally, she protested; "Trust you?" she shook her head, "what are you going to do to me?". He simply smiled and told her to close her eyes again, this time she obliged. After five minutes had gone by she sighed, "Baby! How long does it take?" He merely laughed, said he was an idiot, and told Sofia to open her eyes.
Glancing at her watch this time, she sighed again, five minutes late now. Looking down at what had been the source of her boyfriends idiocy, she beamed. A small bracelet on her right wrist. It had taken him nearly five minutes to tie it on securely, laughing all the while. It was woven in black thread with five purple and blue stones sewn into it. He had declared that it was blessed in a temple back home, and would keep her safe while he was away. Sofia had snickered at that, "Do you really think that I'm that accident prone?" He simply stared at her with a resounding yes' and told her just to look at it whenever she missed him. Such a silly thing to say after all, she would have gotten into a wreck staring at it so often!
The reason she was accident prone was something Sofia had never told her boyfriend. How could she tell him that the reason WAS him? Every time he walked into a room she felt like she was having one of her asthma attacks. Like her heart was going to fall out of her stomach and her chest would burn up from the heat radiating from it. All along he praised her for her cuteness at falling over things that weren't there. If only he knew she was falling over things because of staring at him!
Kicking at the dirty carpet for a fifth time she wanted to scream. Did these pilots not know that there was an anxious, wreck of a girlfriend waiting at the airport? Decidedly, she would scream if he did not step out of that tram within the next two minutes. Take that airport security!' she though with a vengeance. And then, as if right on cue, he was there. He stepped out of the tram, tanner than she remember and wearing her favorite white polo, looking side to side, for her.
With a grin like a Cheshire cat she waved , gaining his attention. His resounding smile nearly knocked her off her feet as she walked towards him, determined not to run like a tacky romance movie. He moved towards her, gently moving people out of his way with a grace she did not possess. Then, within a foot of each other, Sofia, quite literally fell towards him. Dropping his bags he moved forward swiftly, like the tiger he was, and caught her shoulders. Laughing, he mumbled something about his clumsy girl before pulling her towards him. It was good to be home.
