Daily tips to improve dental health

From a young age dental health should become second nature to everyone. Routine, daily care of our teeth and mouth is an activity that takes relatively little time in todays busy schedule. However, it is something that is fundamental to our overall health and well being.

From early childhood, babies and toddlers should be introduced to the concept of brushing their teeth. It is important that this is closely supervised by an adult, to ensure only a pea sized amount of tooth paste is used. Children learn by imitation, so parents setting a good example and brushing their own teeth in view of their children will greatly help in learning.

Once old enough, an electric tooth brush should ideally be introduced. Each surface of each individual tooth should be cleaned for a few seconds, with the brush held still and overlapping the gum - tooth interface. An appropriate tooth paste should be used. This, combined with the use of dental floss or inter-dental brushes will result in comprehensive cleaning.

Teeth should be brushed at least twice daily, or ideally after each meal. Snacking, especially on high sugar foods and drinks, should be avoided. Children should not be allowed to suck on pacifiers that have been dipped in juice or to suck for prolonged periods of time from bottle teats. Abstaining from cigarettes will reduce staining of the teeth and also reduce the risk of oral cancers.

The importance of regular dental checks cannot be over emphasized. Adults should have a routine check at least every six months, or more frequently if requested by their dentist. Young children should accompany their parents to the dentist to become accustomed to the environment, and on reaching the age of two to three years can begin to have check ups themselves.

On initially registering with a dentist, you will be asked to complete a general medical questionnaire. Some of the questions may not seem very relevant to your teeth, but the questionnaire is specifically designed to ensure your dentist is aware of anything that may be relevant. For example, certain heart conditions require you to take antibiotics for certain dental procedures.

At each appointment your dentist will ask if you have had any problems with your teeth or gums. He will inspect every tooth and feel for abnormalities with a probe. He will also look at your gums and oral cavity, to detect any signs of gum disease or warning signs of cancer. The examination should not be painful, but can be a little uncomfortable if your teeth are sensitive. He may also take an xray of your teeth and jaw, to look for any signs of decay.

Your dentist may clean and polish your teeth during your routine check up, or this may be done at a different time by a dental hygienist.

If you have any problems with your teeth between routine appointments it is important to contact your dentist as problems should be dealt with as soon as possible.
