I'm a student. I am a writer. Therefore, I have no money.
This does not have to be, nor should it be, a true statement. Students can find excellent opportunities for freelance writing with the click of a mouse. There are many websites that offer opportunities to people who are willing to spend a few minutes writing a forum that they can do so in, some of which pay fairly well.
Chances are, if you're on this site, you've already discovered that there are many different freelance writing opportunities online. Helium.com is a great place to start; the website offers contests, awards and prizes for writers who discuss specific topics, and has a marketplace featuring businesses that are looking for article writers. If you win or are chosen by a marketplace employer, the rewards can be quite generous. Helium is an easy and fun way to post information that you may have for others to read, and employers are generally impressed when you can provide a link to all of your work on the site.
But the search doesn't have to end here. Just try Googling "paid writing" or "freelance writing opportunities." Thousands of results came back, didn't they? Look at a few of them and see if you qualify for positions; Paidwriter.com offers $4 per 200-400 word article to writers, and websites such as Online-Writing-Jobs.com and Freelancewriting.com provide links and resources for getting paid to write about thousands upon thousands of topics.
Although they aren't officially freelance writing opportunities in an actual sense, writing contests can also be helpful in gaining recognition and possibly money for your writing skills. It is a valuable skill to be able to write well, and if you can, you are miles ahead of many other people who apply for contests just because they thought it might be kind of fun. Look for contests that fit the style of writing that you enjoy. There are many creative writing contests, as well as some journalism and non-fiction contests. Plus, if you end up winning, you can put that down on your resume if you apply for a writing job; it will show to the prospective employer not only that you have talent, but that you can get recognized for it. If you feel confident about a piece and feel that it fits the particular writing contest, send it in. After all, you've gotta be in it to win it!
Freelance writing opportunities are easy to find and fun to do, and you may even be able to earn a little money. All you need to do is point, type and click, and you should find a great freelance writing opportunity in almost no time. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and write!
