The summer is a time of playful indulgence. The temperatures soar and the sun gleams its brightest. The ski slopes close for the season and beaches open for business. Yes, the summer can be exciting and fun. However, if you are struggling with some body image issues, the summer can seem dreadfully frustrating.
We've all been there. We stand in front of the mirror and tell ourselves that if we could just lose those stubborn five or ten pounds, we would look fabulous in those new and popular shorts or strapless sun-dress. Then comes the disappointment when we believe that we'll never measure up to those tanned and toned models that parade down the runway or pose for a magazine cover.
For all us women who face body image issues in the summer, it's time to face the facts. We are not all a size 2 or 4, nor are we all a size 14 or 18w. Not all of us are petite or curvy, hourglass or pear-shaped. If we all had the same body type, then the concept about what is beautiful would become painfully dull.
Each individual is unique, outside as well as inside. By accepting our bodies for how they naturally are, we embrace that individuality and cease our desire for perfection. Confidence is the key to being happy with your physical image. Everyone can look good, no matter what size he or she is.
By dressing yourself to suit your body type, you can greatly benefit your outward appearance, and in turn, increase your confidence. If you are not as thin, curvy, or athletic as you want to be, don't allow it to hamper your style. Wear clothes that fit. Do not squeeze into a skirt that is two sizes too small or hide in a dress that is three sizes too large. Both choices can add to the negative way you may see yourself.
Many people perceive themselves differently than others do. While you may think that you are too thin or overweight, others may not see it that way. Go to a clothing store and bring along someone you trust to give you an honest opinion. Try on some outfits in two different sizes to see which is a better fit for your body. You may be surprised to find that you might not be the size you think you are.
Another option is to dress for your assets. Pick your best feature and wear clothes to accentuate it. If you don't like to show a lot of skin, there are ways to keep cool in the hot weather and still be stylish. Wear a camisole underneath a too-revealing top or Bermuda shorts if you aren't comfortable showing your legs.
Everyone can get over body image issues. Accept your individuality and chances are others will too. Be comfortable in your own skin and don't beat yourself up about those big hips or bony legs. Be confident and let your beauty shine through.
