A guide to backyard games that incorporate exercise

Summer is approaching. It's time to think about how we're going to shed the extra pounds we put on during hibernation. What better way then to have fun outside and breathe fresh air at the same time. You won't even realize it's exercise. It's time to go outside and play!

Frisbee is a classic game to play and doesn't require much equipment. There are many forms of the Frisbee these days, but they all hold the same theory. Fling the disk back and forth to a partner. This game will have you running around and possibly doing tricks, all while getting your heart pumping.

Badminton is a game for two or more players involving a net, rackets, and shuttlecocks. It reminds me of tennis, except unlike the tennis ball, the shuttlecock isn't suppose to reach the ground. Hitting the shuttlecock back and forth is sure to give your arms and legs a nice workout.
Volleyball is also played with a net. Sometimes you can get a badminton and volleyball setup all in the same kit which can be very convenient.

Kickball and dodge-ball can be played using the same ball. These are good games for larger groups of people as you will need teams. You might remember these games from your school days. They're still fun today and not just for kids, either! There is even an adult kickball association and dodge-ball leagues and tournaments.

Paint-ball has been very popular the past few years, but is better left on the field in full gear. For simple backyard fun, use squirt guns or have a water balloon fight. Not only will you get a good work out but you'll also be cooled off at the same time.

Football, basketball, and soccer are also good choices. Baseball or softball can be fun, or even just a nice game of catch will get you moving. There are many easy choices of games depending on the number of participants.

Whatever your game don't forget to keep your body hydrated. Avoid sodas and heavy drinks. Instead down some water, Gatorade, or other see through liquids to keep you going. Be sure to eat a good breakfast to get you fueled up, but don't eat a heavy meal right before game time. It will slow you down and might make you feel sick. Instead opt for a nice barbecue or picnic after the game to give your body nourishment and a little time to relax and replenish.
