When I played Ultratron it felt like a throwback to the 70's. Everything about it screams 1970's arcade machine; not that that's a bad thing! Way back when there was a game called Robotron and Ultratron takes its basic principles from this. You play as the last humanoid robot remaining and you must defeat the evil enemies to save the Earth.
To start with you get a 60 minute free trial but if you want to upgrade to the full version and play whenever you like for as long as you like it will cost you $20.
Game Play
The game play in Ultratron is basic yet addictive. You have your humanoid robot and shoot other evil robots. That is simple enough but what makes this game addictive is the same factor that made Tetris a cult legend; it's replay value. Everybody liked trying to beat their previous high score on Tetris and this is the same for Ultratron.
Graphics
The graphics are quite laughable to be honest but this isn't a game made to show off its graphical genius. This is a game made to be fun and addictive. The graphics are visible enough to play the game (which ultimately is what counts!) and for an arcade shooter they're not bad.
Sound
Here is my personal gripe; the sound was appalling. Repetitive music has been in games for many a year but this just has a really irritating tone to it and after 15 minutes I had to turn the mute on.
Creativity
Ultratron appears to be a sequel to Robotron: 2084 (also released on Xbox Live) and it takes the idea one step further. Instead of having to save Mommy, Daddy and Mikey you have to defeat bosses and face challenge stages. Whilst this may appear to be a step backwards it works well and means you can concentrate more on the task in hand; shooting the enemy!
Innovation
As I've already stated the changes that have been made from Robotron: 2084 work quite well. There is also a new feature of boss stages and both assault stages and challenge stages add to the mix to ensure the game doesn't feel stale. Whilst the first boss battle is reasonably easy the later bosses require a little positional consideration and a lot of shooting!
My Verdict
This is a decent arcade style game but, I personally, couldn't remain hooked on this long enough to pay the extra $20 fee to upgrade to the full version. If it was $10 I would most certainly consider it.
The Rating: 3 out of 5 (This rating takes into account value for money for the upgrade. I would rate it 4 out of 5 based purely on the game.)
