Tips for planning vacations in Hawaii

Your dreams of sandy beaches, rolling waves, pineapple slices and tropical breezes are about to come true. You have decided to go Hawaii, the island state that promises a paradise vacation like no other. So besides hiring a travel agent, what should you consider when planning your dream getaway?

DEFINE YOUR PARADISE

Hawaii is home to eight islands, ranging from the seclusion of invitation-only Kaho'olawe to the hustle and bustle of its main island, Oahu. Each island has something different to offer from captivating historical tours to adrenaline pumping ziplines, so be sure to research travel guides and website to find the island for you. You can also visit more than one island as their close proximity makes it possible to come and go in a single day. For a unique experience, board the Pride of Aloha for a 7-day cruise that includes four outer islands and a relaxed, no-agenda atmosphere.

Also, if you're on a honeymoon or the increasingly popular babymoon, there are packages designed to specifically fit your personal needs. Figure out what you want and go from there, the possibilities are endless.

DETERMINE YOUR BUDGET

Contrary to popular belief, a vacation to Hawaii can be done on a budget. If your vacation time is flexible, avoid the peak travel season of mid-December to mid-April as costs will be higher for airfare, lodging, and activities. There are bed and breakfasts as well as hostels available for minimal nightly fees. You can also look for vacation packages that combine airfare, lodging, and tours for a discounted price. There are many free hula shows and locals can point you in the direction of mouth watering restaurants with inexpensive prices and large portions. Also, shopping outside of tourist hotspots will save you a good chunk of cash. A rental car is a luxury, but not absolutely necessary, especially if you are staying in oh-so-famous Waikiki. Plus, don't forget that Hawaii is a state rich with the great outdoors and basking on the beach is free. You can also look in local newspapers to for listings of community events with little or no cost.

TIME OF YEAR

Beyond expenses, the timing of your trip is an important consideration. The ocean is not a consistent creature, with waves on the North Shore of Oahu ranging from slight ripples in the summer to towering two story monsters in the winter.
