First time visitors to O'ahu can be overwhelmed by the number of tourist attractions on the third largest island in the Hawaiian chain. Without a doubt, some key sights merit seeing since they illuminate the past and pageantry of this great state. The island is naturally scenic with mountains, rain forests, volcanic craters, and tropical beaches. O'ahu also boasts the top visitor destination in the entire state, Waikiki Beach. Waikiki can certainly satisfy your yearning for beaches, fine dining, lodging, and entertainment. Yet O'ahu offers even more culture as you venture beyond the bounds of Waikiki . Here are just a few excursions you won't want to omit from your itinerary. Plan on enjoying a scenic drive and absorbing the cultural side of this beautiful island.

Polynesian Cultural Center
A family can easily enjoy the day at this venue just an hour's drive from Waikiki. You will immerse yourself in the culture of Hawaii as well as other Polynesian island groups. Stroll through the seven recreated villages representing Hawaii, Samoa, Maori New Zealand, Tahiti, Tonga, and Rapa Nui. Authentic hands-on exhibits by native islanders blend entertainment with education to delight every age. Join the natives in making poi from taro root, crafting tapa cloth from mulberry bark, climbing a coconut tree, or carving wood. Each afternoon, a canoe pageant is staged in the main lagoon area. You may shop in a marketplace, sample island food in the villages, or dine in the Gateway Restaurant.

A handful of colorful shows complete the experience ranging from the IMAX theater, the award-winning Polynesian evening entertainment, and the Ali'I Luau which is an optional feast. Basic admission is $50 adults, $38 children, which includes cultural center and the evening show. The Luau package is $80 adults, $56 children and includes the luau and basic admission attractions.

USS Arizona National Memorial
This stately memorial, located at Pearl Harbor is the resting place for 1,102 of the sailors who lost their lives during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Operated by the National Park Service, the memorial spans the sunken remains of the battleship. The tour of the memorial is about 75 minutes and begins at the visitor center, where you will receive a ticket, but admission is free.

There is a 23 minute video shown prior to boarding a small water craft to take you out to the Arizona. It is very moving and an integral part of the experience. Take time before
