NBA team profile: 2007/2008 San Antonio Spurs
The Spurs return to defend their title with a similar roster than that had when they swept the Cavs in the Finals. The Spurs laid claim to a bit of all time records to start the season. With the 2007 sweep, the Spurs have the highest winning percentage in NBA Finals history. The Spurs have only missed the playoffs 4 times as an NBA franchise with 26 trips to the playoffs. They also have taken the division title 15 times Tops in that span the Lakers are second with 14. Among the four major U.S. sports, the Atlanta Braves and the New York Yankees are the only other teams with 15 divisional titles during those last 30 years. This Spurs team wins with defense, they had the third best scoring defense in the NBA, holding their opponents to 90.6 points per game, including holding 67 of 82 opponents below 100 points. The Spurs are going to try to defend that title the same way. The big change in the roster is the replacement of Nasr Mohammed with Fabrico Oberto in the center spot.
Starters - Gregg Popovich used 15 different starting lineups this season. The group with the most starts was Bowen, Duncan, Oberto, Finley and Parker, I will include Manu in my starter rundown as he will no doubt be a prime importance on this year and should assume the starting role next year.
C- Fabricio Oberto; averaged 4.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 20.1 minutes per game.
One of only two Spurs to appear in all 82 games, starting in 64. Oberto shot a team-best .608 from the field and had 10 or more rebounds in 8 games. Fabrico had 4 double-doubles and led the team in scoring once, rebounding 12 times, steals seven times and blocks eight times
PF- Tim Duncan; 19.3 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.95 blocks in 34.0 minutes per game
Duncan started all 78 games he played in. Duncan finished the season fourth in the NBA in rebounds and eighth in blocks. Tim had 53 double-doubles, fourth in the NBA and led the team in scoring 30 times, rebounds 59 times, assists 10 times, steals 18 times and in blocks 63 times. Tim has been named to 10 straight All-Defensive Teams and 10 All-Star games. Duncan is still the premier Power Forward in NBA history and is not showing many signs of slowing down despite the sheer numbers of games and minutes that he is playing, but Tim has a love of the game and a professionalism that will carry him on the court as long as he is successful at playing.
SF- Bruce Bowen; Averaged 6.0 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1
