A few years ago a friend mentioned a cartoon that her kids loved. The main character was a yellow sponge that sported brown, square shorts, and headed up a cast of characters that entertained a younger audience while delivering cleverly subtle humor that its adult fans could enjoy as well. I thought the premise of the show didn't sound very entertaining and forgot about it until my children begged me to sit and watch an episode of SpongeBob Square Pants with them; I've been a fan ever since.
The humor that is woven in to each episode expresses the originality of writing for this cartoon. Sponge-bob is extraordinary, however; the cartoon wouldn't be the same without the supporting cast of unique sea creatures that act as friends. The show focuses on Sponge-bob and friends and the many adventures that seek them out. For example, in one episode he and his friend Patrick make their imaginary play come to life inside an ordinary box. Let's indulge ourselves by taking a trip to the ocean floor and visit the set of Bikini Bottom and the array of fishy citizens that inhibit it.
It's only fitting that Sponge-bob's best friend Patrick be introduced first. Picture a drooling, lovable puppy with the intelligence of a pencil only the puppy is a pink starfish in fetching Bermuda shorts. He resides under a rock that houses a television, bed and chair. The lack of intelligence, dopey persona, and voice to match is what defines this character and gives the writers a wide variety of amusing story lines to play with involving Patrick and Sponge-bob. The facial expressions that only a cartoon character could pass off are one of Patrick's best features.
Moving on to the character of Squidward, an octopus with attitude, the audience will quickly discover his unfortunate disposition; serious negativity. If the sun is out, it's "too bright" or if he wins a contest, the prize isn't big enough. Once again, however; the show could not function without this pragmatic character because he delivers the creative one-liners like no other cartoon octopus. In his low, nasally voice he will be singing in his bubble bath one moment and yelling at Sponge-bob the next for coming up through the drain because Sponge-bob needed a place to hide while playing hide and seek with Patrick. Squidward may express a great dislike for the cheerful sponge, but deep down there is a ray of "like."
Sandy is also a local of the community and friend of Sponge-bob; however she is not a sea creature. She is a squirrel.
