Yes, there are easy ways to lose weight. I'm living proof!

However, there are no easy ways to lose weight QUICKLY. If you cut more than 200 calories a day out of your diet, your body thinks there's a famine in the land, and goes into "protect-what-you've-got" mode, slowing your metabolism and hanging onto every fat cell for dear life — which is exactly the opposite of what you WANT to have happen!

Here is my "rest of your life" diet. I designed it several years ago, on the day I realized that over my entire life, I have lost well over a thousand pounds — and regained the weight I lost not once, but again and again. I am here to tell you, the experts are right: Weight-loss diets only work while you're on them.

The good news is, I've currently lost 80 pounds. The bad news is, it's taken me more than three years, and I'm still 20 pounds from my goal. But who cares? When the weight is finally gone, it will be gone FOREVER. Can you say the same thing about the last diet you tried? How about the last 20 diets you tried?

* RULE 1: Eat foods you love. * The first time I went on Weight Watchers, the program required participants to eat liver once a week. Except in paté, I HATE liver! Other diets required me to eat only meats and fats, to eat only grapefruit and cabbage soup, to drink only an expensive powder dissolved in water, and worse. I tried them. I stuck to them and lost weight. I was irritable, mean, and snappish. If I live to be 120, I will never eat those foods again.

Anyone can lose weight on any diet — as long as you stick to the diet. But what happens when you reach your goal weight? After a brief interval, most people go right back to the eating habits that got them fat to begin with. Then they're astonished when pretty soon their old eating habits return them to their old, fat bodies.

If you're like me, you want to live to be 114, and to die active, healthy, and mentally vigorous. I know several women who are over 90 years old, and every single one of them is just that — and every single one of them is a healthy weight for her height. When I die at age 114, I want to weigh 140 pounds. The older you are, the slower your metabolism gets, so at age 114, I want to be happy eating 1,400 calories a day. Right now I'm not even half that age, so for three years now, I've lived quite happily on about 1,600 calories a day.

And I eat my favorite foods! I try for the usual parameters of a healthy diet — heavy
