As a platform game enthusiast, I was sold on Jasper's Journey's from the moment I saw the screen captures on developer Lexaloffle's website. However, even I couldn't have known how wonderful this game would be.
The story line of Jasper's Journey endears the player; poor Jasper's cat Orlando is stolen by a witch who wishes to use him as an ingredient for a magic potion. Jasper heads out bravely to reclaim his lost friend. As is typical for classic side-scrollers, you will encounter a perhaps less than healthy compulsive desire to collect items presented throughout the game- namely fruit which powers your weapon and gems that act as currency. Your gems allow you to purchase items at the RPG-reminiscent "Inn" found in every level such as game saves, fruit, and other goods to help you progress in the game. Take advantage of the game saves because otherwise a lost life results in an irritating level restart and loss of all the items you've collected. Fruit and gems are plentiful in each level, so it is not necessary to worry about those you miss, but perfectionist platform addicts will want nothing less than total level completion. Lexaloffle could have improved the game challenge experience by adding a counter for remaining items, enabling even the most picky gamer to set a goal to visit every area of every level until no stone is unturned.
On the subject of visiting each area of the game, I should mention what may be the game's most fantastic feature- secrets! Unlike completely straightforward platforms like Mario, Jasper's Journey encourages step-retracing, exploring, and hunting through each level for brilliant secrets such as potions that grant special abilities, more items, yellow orbs that unveil hidden treasure rooms, and more! There are perhaps as many hidden passages in every level as there are clearly identified passageways. It is possible to complete the game without any of the secrets, making this a good choice for gamers with children who need a less challenging game.
Any fan of side-scrolling platformers should definitely play the demo and will likely be tempted to purchase the full game. With charming sound effects and sometimes haunting retro-RPG-like music, beautiful fantasy landscapes and a lighthearted feel, Jasper's is a journey for everyone. This game receives an enthusiastic 5/5!
