How to improve daily dental health

We tend to ignore our teeth until they begin to cause us pain. Pain in our mouths as well as our pocket books but there is a way to avoid the pain: Simple, preventive tooth care. It turns out that the old adage is true. An ounce of prevention is, indeed, worth a pound of cure especially when it comes to your teeth.

The best way to avoid trouble is to prevent it from happening in the first place. The way to accomplish this with your teeth is to be sure and care for them properly. For instance, you should always brush and floss your teeth at least twice every day. It is also important to eat a balanced and healthy diet. Limiting your intake of sugary foods and beverages is also important. Likewise, you should not eat right before going to bed. Your mouth is naturally drier during sleep and any food you eat will leave behind a residue that can cause cavities over time.

Of course, having regular dental exams is also an important part of proper oral care. Adults should see a dentist at least once per year and, if problems are found, more often if necessary. A typical routine dental exam is quick and painless. An exam should not take more than an hour of your time and probably much less than that.

First a dental hygienist will take a history of any previous problems you may have had then do a cleaning. This is a simple procedure and although you may find it a little uncomfortable it should not be painful. The hygienist may also take x-rays, especially if you are a new patient or have not had any previously taken. X-rays will help the Dentist see how your teeth and jaw bones fit together. You may also receive a fluoride treatment which may be either a rinse that you swish around in your mouth or a gel that is applied directly to your teeth and left in place for several minutes before being rinsed out of your mouth.

After the cleaning, x-rays and any other procedures have been performed the dentist will do a thorough oral exam. This exam will look for any signs of decay or disease. The dentist may also discuss with you things like your daily tooth care routine, your diet and certain personal habits such as smoking or other tobacco use. If any problems such as cavities or gum abnormalities are found another appointment will be set up in order to address these issues. The entire exam will most likely take no longer than 30 to 45 minutes.

Simple, painless and easy. So, don't ignore your teeth until they start causing you problems and costing you money. Avoid the problems by practicing an ounce of prevention.
