Mary didn't know what to think about what she saw. She was twenty years old but had lived a life of lies, lies to her mother, her father, her sister, her supervisor, and even to herself.

No one would believe her, not in a million years. It's funny when you lie, you start to believe it after awhile, as if you are rationalizing the lie in your own mind, that it was okay to make up this story or that story.

By the time she got home, it was about 11:30 pm. The air was cool for summertime in Maine, but the ground where she was standing when she saw it It was hot, her feet were on fire, and actually the soles of her hiking boots were worn away with pock-marked holes that actually smelled of burned rubber or whatever the hell they make boots out of at L.L. Bean's.

Mary's hands were shaking when she dialed her best friend, Tia. "Hi, Mrs. Anderson:, Mary's voice quavering, "Tia home? I need to talk to her". Tia's mom responded annoyedly, "Do you know what time it is?". Tia's mom was pretty much sick of Mary. She was trouble in her book, but Tia loved her best friend and forgave her for just about everything.

As Mary was sitting on her bed with the phone in her hand, she noticed something inching out of her boot. Her foot itched like hell, and she thought it was some kind of reaction to the burnt boots, and all. Mary hung up on Tia's mom abruptly, because what she saw coming out of foot was freaking disturbing, "Oh oh, Oh, My God!" Mary exclaimed, no one was home at her house. Her parents had gone out to dinner and to a friend's house for cards. "Oh it hurts!" The itching had stopped and it was burning like fire on the bottom of her right foot, a pain that was impossible to describe.

She found in some dream-like sensation the odd humor of it all, here she, a pathological lying jerk witnessing an event that only a select few of people had seen in their lives that no one she knew would believe and she was in trouble with something infesting her foot, possibly from another world, it reminded her of some weird ' B-movie' from the sixties and she was the main character. She felt alone and afraid, she then did a strange thing, she cried a gutteral "Mommy, help me." then she passed out.

It must have been several hours had passed when Mary had her event in the woods. She had gone through the woods on a shortcut to the store about 7:30 pm and when she left to go home, it was 11:30 pm, yet she was only gone for fifteen minutes or so she thought. Her watch read 7:45 pm yet in the span
